Gavin Yap's FORK IT Returns This September at the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre
A heartfelt celebration of food, family and the memories that make us Malaysian.

— After captivating audiences with two sold-out seasons at Bobo KL, award-winning filmmaker, actor and storyteller Gavin Yap returns with FORK IT: One Man’s Journey Through Food & Memories, making its biggest outing yet at the Jeffrey Cheah Performing Arts Centre (JCPAC) from 11–13 September 2026.

Presented by JCPAC, produced by Superbear Productions, FORK IT is more than a one-man show. It is a deeply personal yet unmistakably Malaysian story that explores how food becomes the thread connecting family, identity, heritage and memory.

For Gavin, every meal tells a story. Some are joyful. Others bittersweet.

Together, they form a theatrical journey that reminds audiences of something profoundly familiar, that every Malaysian, regardless of race, culture or background, has a story that begins around a table.

Blending humour with vulnerability, FORK IT follows Gavin’s experiences growing up as a mixed Chinese-English Malaysian, navigating questions of identity, belonging and family through the universal language of food. What begins as one man’s memories gradually becomes a reflection of our own.

“Food is never just food,” says Gavin Yap.

“Every dish carries a memory. Every family has recipes that hold stories, traditions and people we never forget. I wanted to create a show that reminds us that while our backgrounds may be different, the table is where we laugh, argue, celebrate, heal and ultimately find each other.”

Originally staged at the intimate Bobo KL in 2024 and 2025, FORK IT quickly built a loyal following. Its move to JCPAC marks an exciting new chapter, allowing a wider audience to experience one of Malaysia’s most distinctive original theatre works.

Written by Gavin Yap and Honey Ahmad, the production strips theatre back to its essentials: one performer, one stage and a lifetime of stories. Through sharp writing, expressive performance and evocative staging, FORK IT seamlessly shifts between comedy and poignant reflection, proving that the most powerful stories are often the most personal.

The production also reflects the growing strength of original Malaysian storytelling, stories rooted not in spectacle, but in authenticity. In a multicultural nation where food is one of the few experiences shared across every community, FORK IT invites audiences to recognise themselves in one another through the simple act of sharing a meal.

Whether it is the smell of a favourite childhood dish, a festive family gathering, or the comfort of a late-night supper, FORK IT celebrates the moments that shape who we are and reminds us that food is more than sustenance… it is memory, identity and home.
