HOMME INTERVIEW: ARTIST RULL MACKENZIE AKA HAIROL MASRI NOKHIL

HOMME has the distinct pleasure of introducing Rull MacKenzie, a talented young Malaysian abstract artist, in his debut interview for HOMME Magazine. With a unique fusion of cultural elements and modern aesthetics, Rull’s work transcends traditional boundaries, inviting viewers into a vibrant world of emotion and expression. As he emerges onto the international art scene, we sat down with him to explore his artistic journey, inspirations, and the vision behind his captivating creations.

HOMME Magazine: Welcome, Rull! It’s a privilege to have you with us. Can you start by telling us a little about your background and what led you to pursue a career in art?
Rull MacKenzie: Thank you for having me! Let me introduce myself, my real name is Hairol Masri Nokhil. I grew up in Klang, a small town in Malaysia, surrounded by diverse cultures and rich traditions. From a young age, I was drawn to colours, shapes, and the stories they tell. My interest in art deepened during my 11 years in aviation. My transition into the art world was an unexpected journey. From the skies as an international cabin crew for Malaysia Airlines and EuroAtlantic Airways, my career took a surprising turn, leading me to the vibrant world of abstract painting. My travels exposed me to a plethora of cultures and artistic expressions, which profoundly influenced my artistic vision. In 2015, I decided to follow my passion for painting and dedicated myself to the craft full-time.

One of my favourite notable pieces, “Perpetuity 2018 & Towards Immortality 2018,” symbolizes the perpetual journey towards immortality through its vibrant colours and fluid form.
“Perpetuity”: “Perpetuity” captures a serene moment with a kingfisher perched on a delicate branch. The bird’s vibrant blue and orange feathers stand out against a gradient background that transitions from warm yellows to cool greens and blues, evoking dawn over a tranquil riverbank. The detailed rendering of the kingfisher balances realism with abstract elements, emphasizing the bird as the focal point. The title “Perpetuity” suggests everlasting beauty and invites viewers to appreciate the timeless elegance of the scene.
“Towards Immortality”: “Towards Immortality” showcases a kingfisher perched on a branch, its striking blue and orange plumage contrasting with a background of warm oranges and yellows blended with cool greens and blues. The abstract yet soothing colors evoke serenity and dynamism, capturing the fleeting yet eternal essence of nature. The meticulous portrayal of the bird symbolizes the pursuit of timeless existence and the aspiration towards immortality. The painting’s title implies connecting with something eternal through nature’s beauty and grace.
My journey from an international cabin crew member to a critically acclaimed artist has been profoundly influenced by personal and societal events, including the tragedies of MH370 and MH17. These events left an indelible mark on my work, infusing it with themes of loss, resilience, and the delicate beauty of life, as highlighted in the article “Dreaming in Abstracts” by Priscila Emmanuel.
The two paintings, “Perpetuity” and “Towards Immortality,” are integral parts of my carefully crafted series, each completed at different times yet designed to weave together a cohesive narrative. Further enriching this narrative is an abstract piece characterized by an explosion of vibrant greens, reds, and yellows, with hints of blue weaving in and out. This abstract work serves as a dynamic representation of the emotional landscapes and complex experiences that shape my perspective. The bold brushstrokes and vivid colors reflect a sense of energy and vitality, portraying a visual symphony of emotions that encompass both chaos and harmony.
Together, these artworks capture a journey through diverse emotional landscapes, blending themes of eternal beauty, aspiration towards immortality, and the resilience of the human spirit. The interplay of colors, forms, and brushstrokes in these pieces mirrors the complexity of life, creating a powerful and evocative visual narrative that invites viewers to engage deeply and reflect on their own interpretations.

Another piece, “Hidden Dragon – 2017,” showcases my skill in creating intricate and dynamic compositions, hinting at hidden power within the abstract forms. I realized that abstract art allowed me to express emotions that words couldn’t capture. It became a way to explore my identity and connect with the world around me.
HOMME Magazine: Your artwork often blends traditional Malaysian motifs with contemporary techniques. How do you balance these different influences in your work?
Rull MacKenzie: That’s an interesting question ,as an artist, I believe that art is a dialogue between the past and the present. I draw inspiration from Malaysian textiles, patterns, and nature, infusing them with modern techniques like pouring, layering, and mixed media. This fusion creates a unique narrative that reflects both my heritage and my contemporary experiences. It’s about honouring my roots while embracing innovation.
I endeavour to masterfully blend traditional Malaysian motifs with contemporary techniques in my artwork. My creative process incorporates elements of Malaysian culture, such as traditional patterns, symbols, and themes, into my vibrant and abstract compositions. This fusion pays homage to my heritage while embracing modern artistic methods.
For instance, I might use traditional Malaysian batik patterns, wooden carvings or motifs inspired by our local flora and fauna, presenting them in a contemporary style with bold colors and abstract forms. This harmonious blend of old and new results in visually captivating and culturally rich pieces that reflect my artistic vision and cultural identity.

Serenity 60cm x 90cm 2021
“Serenity” by Rull Mackenzie is a stunning underwater scene with vibrant blue waters and flowing strands of seaweed. The painting features five golden fish swimming gracefully, adding a sense of movement. The intricate decorative border at the bottom showcases gold and dark blue patterns reminiscent of Malay batik and carving motifs, with floral designs and two prominent white flowers. The painting masterfully combines natural elements with traditional Malay artistry, creating a harmonious and visually captivating piece.
HOMME Magazine: Your use of colour is striking and evocative. Can you share your creative process when it comes to selecting a colour palette for your pieces?
Rull MacKenzie: Colour is a fundamental aspect of my work. It often stems from my emotional state or what I want to convey through a piece. I spend time examining how different colours interact and evoke feelings. Sometimes I’ll create swatches or small studies before diving into a larger canvas. I like to let the colours speak to me and guide the narrative, allowing for spontaneity and surprise to emerge in the process.
HOMME Magazine: As a young artist, what challenges have you faced in the art world, and how have you overcome them?
Rull MacKenzie: One of the biggest challenges has been gaining visibility and recognition in a competitive field. There were times when I felt like my voice was lost amidst the noise. However, I found strength in my community and through collaborations with other artists, which helped me grow and learn. Persistence and staying true to my vision have been key. I remind myself that every piece I create is a step forward in my journey.

HOMME Magazine: Looking ahead, what are your aspirations as an artist? Are there any particular themes or concepts you wish to explore further?
Rull MacKenzie: I have so many ideas bubbling! I’m particularly interested in exploring themes of identity, memory, and the connection between nature and urban life. I want to dive deeper into the conversations surrounding cultural heritage in a globalized world. My aspiration is to create work that resonates universally while still honouring my roots. I dream of holding exhibitions that encourage dialogue and foster connections among diverse audiences.
Art, to me, reflects society and history. It captures the essence of our times and the emotions that define them. My works are a testament to this belief, as I strive to convey complex societal themes and historical narratives through my abstract style. Influences from literary works, such as Oscar Wilde’s essay “The Decay of Lying,” play a significant role in shaping my artistic philosophy. Wilde’s idea that art should transcend reality resonates deeply with me, and I aim to create a visual language that goes beyond mere representation.
My journey in abstract painting has been one of constant evolution. Initially, my works were more experimental, as I explored different techniques and mediums to find my unique voice. Over the years, my style has become more refined and expressive, with a stronger emphasis on vibrant colours and emotional depth. My paintings often undergo multiple stages of emotional and sensory processing, resulting in artworks that possess incredible depth and soul.
HOMME Magazine: That’s inspiring! What advice would you give to emerging artists who look up to you?
Rull MacKenzie: Trust your instincts and embrace your unique voice. Don’t be afraid to experiment and take risks; the journey is just as important as the destination. Surround yourself with a supportive community and stay open to feedback, but remain true to what you want to express. Art is a personal journey, and every brushstroke is a step toward discovering who you are.
Art is not just about aesthetics; it’s about evoking emotions and connecting with viewers on a profound level. My journey has taught me that it’s never too late to follow one’s passion and reinvent oneself. Each painting is a reflection of my experiences, inspirations, and the world around me. Through my art, I hope to offer a glimpse into the depths of human emotion and the beauty of our ever-changing world.

HOMME: Tell us about your childhood and upbringing?
Rull MacKenzie: Growing up, I was surrounded by an environment brimming with creativity and inspiration. My childhood was a canvas filled with moments of artistic exploration. I vividly remember sketching in notebooks, playing with colors, and being endlessly curious about the world around me. These early experiences were more than just playful activities—they were the building blocks of my creative journey.
My family played an instrumental role in nurturing my artistic inclinations. They encouraged my creative pursuits, providing me with the freedom and support to explore my interests. Whether it was attending art classes, visiting museums, or simply discussing ideas at the dinner table, their unwavering support fostered a sense of confidence and curiosity within me.
Particularly, most of my aunties, AAK (which stands for “ada aku kesah!,” literally translating to “like I care!”), played a critical role in my journey. Their attitude and the phrase motivated me to show them that I could succeed in making art. This unique form of encouragement helped me develop the determination and motivation to pursue my passion.
The nurturing environment of my upbringing allowed me to experiment and find joy in the process of creation. It wasn’t just about the end result; it was about the journey of discovery and self-expression. This foundation of creativity and support laid the groundwork for my passion for art, and it has been a guiding force throughout my life.
These formative years instilled in me the belief that art is a powerful means of communication and a reflection of one’s inner world. They taught me that creativity knows no bounds and that it’s never too late to follow one’s passion. As I transitioned from my career in aviation to becoming a full-time artist, these early lessons continued to inspire and shape my artistic vision.
Today, as I stand before a blank canvas, I am reminded of the childhood moments that sparked my love for art. Each brushstroke is a tribute to the nurturing environment that allowed me to dream, create, and ultimately, find my voice as an artist.
HOMME: Favourite artist?
Rull MacKenzie: For answering this question, here are a few of my favourite artists: Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Pablo Picasso. Their timeless works have been a constant source of inspiration for me, shaping my own artistic journey and leading me to develop my unique technique called ‘Pitchy Patchy’ which comes from the sound and movement when applying paint onto canvas. This innovative style combines the impressionistic spirit of Monet, the emotional intensity of van Gogh, and the rebellious creativity of Picasso. Each brushstroke is a blend of their influences, yet distinctly my own, capturing the essence of my experiences and visions.
The Title ‘The Monet of Malaysia’
This innovation is one of the reasons some collectors have given me the title ‘The Monet of Malaysia,’ which I humbly accepted. It is an honour to be compared to such a legendary artist, but I believe that beauty belongs to the eye of those who see it. Art is subjective, and each viewer brings their own perspective and emotions to the experience, making every interpretation unique and valuable.
Lack of Local Influence
If we talk about Malaysian artists, I must admit that none have deeply influenced me. My paintings are inspired by my travels, the diverse landscapes, cultures, and people I encounter along the way. These experiences shape my art, infusing it with a sense of adventure and discovery. Unfortunately, this focus on exploration has left me with little opportunity to get to know local artists and their works, which I hope to remedy in the future.
Biduanita Dato’ Seri Siti Nurhaliza
Yet, there is one artist in the music industry whose songs always accompany me when I paint, keeping boredom at bay and fueling my motivation. Her music transcends boundaries and has been a constant companion in my creative process. I have adored her since I was little, and her success now gives me the strength to go beyond. This artist is none other than Biduanita Dato’ Seri Siti Nurhaliza. Her voice is a brush that paints emotions on the canvas of my heart, her melodies the colors that brighten my soul. Just as Monet captures the fleeting beauty of nature, van Gogh expresses raw emotion, and Picasso deconstructs reality, Siti Nurhaliza embodies the essence of artistry through her enchanting performances. She is a true masterpiece in the world of music and a symbol of artistic brilliance. Dato’ Sri Siti, if you are reading this, I just want to say thank you.”

A Symphony of Light and Emotion: A Critique of Rull MacKenzie’s Impressionist Vision
Rull MacKenzie’s latest work, a breathtaking 3 x 3 feet Impressionist painting, is a mesmerizing study of color, light, and texture. Echoing the timeless techniques of Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, MacKenzie employs a masterful blend of layered impasto and subtle tonal transitions to evoke an atmosphere of serenity and introspection.
At first glance, the composition resonates with the spirit of Monet’s Water Lilies series, not through literal depiction but through an emotive, almost dreamlike interpretation of nature. The color palette, ranging from soft, sunlit yellows to deep, contemplative greens and blues, captures the essence of shifting daylight, much like the dappled reflections on a pond’s surface in Impressionist masterpieces.

Springtime 60cm x 45cm 2018
The painting titled “Spring Time” is an abstract piece that exudes vibrancy and dynamism. It’s filled with a rich blend of colors like greens, blues, yellows, reds, and oranges, applied in a textured manner. The varying brushstrokes create a sense of depth and movement, adding complexity and interest. The overall theme evokes the lively and rejuvenating essence of spring, reminiscent of blooming flowers and the renewal of nature.
HOMME: Motto?
Rull Mackenzie: Secret Ambition, Symbolism of Dream, and Personal Iconography
In the intricate dance of creation, my art is a testament to the tapestry of my experiences. Each stroke of my brush, every form, and hue I lay upon the canvas is more than an act of creation; it’s a passage into the realm of my secret ambitions.
Art, to me, is the language of the soul, spoken through symbols that whisper the truths of my deepest yearnings. My dreams are not mere illusions but a treasure trove of unspoken aspirations. Personal iconography—those unique symbols that resonate with my being—act as guiding stars, illuminating the path to my inner world.
Life, with its myriad experiences, shapes the symbols that I weave into my work. Every significant event, emotional resonance, and cultural influence finds its way onto the canvas, creating a visual diary of my journey. Symbols of personal significance, recurring dreams, and themes of love, loss, and growth become the fabric of my storytelling.
Through composition, color, and light, I evoke emotions and set the stage for my narrative. Characters and personal icons breathe life into my work, each element contributing to the overarching story. I embrace authenticity, allowing vulnerability and honesty to shine through, forging a deeper connection with my audience.
In this lifelong quest, I remain steadfast, exploring the depths of my subconscious and dreams to uncover the true essence of my artistic vision. My art is not just an expression but a manifestation of my secret ambitions, rendered through the timeless language of symbolism.
HOMME: 2025 What have you got planned?
Rull Mackenzie: 2025 is set to be a vibrant year, brimming with artistic achievements and new adventures. Since the beginning of my journey in 2014 until now, I’ve created around 350 pieces of art, each one a testament to my growth and exploration as an artist. This year, I have several aspirations, with one of my top priorities being to participate in various art exhibitions. Showcasing my work to a broader audience is a dream I’ve held close to my heart.
I am thrilled to share that several of my paintings will be auctioned by Owner’s Auction @ Lapan Auction on February 20th at Megan Avenue 2, organized by Ng Mau Chan and Co. This auction feels like a significant milestone in my career. I still remember the first time I sold a painting—it was a small piece, but the joy and validation I felt were immeasurable. I hope to feel that same excitement again as my work reaches new collectors and art enthusiasts.
Travel has always been a wellspring of inspiration for me. One of my fondest memories is of a trip to Italy, where I was mesmerized by the play of light and shadow in the narrow, cobblestone streets of Milan. That experience deeply influenced my work and broadened my creative horizons. This year, I plan to travel more, seeking out new experiences and perspectives to fuel my creativity. I believe that the diversity of cultures and landscapes will significantly influence my future artworks.
Marketing Strategy: To ensure my artwork reaches a wide and appreciative audience, I will implement a comprehensive marketing strategy. This includes:
- Social Media Presence: Enhancing my online presence on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok by regularly posting updates, behind-the-scenes content, and showcasing new artworks. Engaging with my followers through live sessions, art tutorials, and Q&A sessions will help build a loyal community around my art.
- Collaborations and Partnerships: Partnering with influencers, art bloggers, and other artists to increase visibility. Collaborations can lead to cross-promotion and attract new followers who share a passion for art.
- Email Campaigns: Sending out newsletters and updates to my mailing list, sharing upcoming events, new artwork releases, and special offers. Personalized emails can keep my audience engaged and informed.
- Gallery and Exhibition Partnerships: Establishing relationships with reputable galleries and participating in high-profile art exhibitions to gain credibility and exposure. Networking with gallery owners and curators can open doors to new opportunities.
- Online Art Marketplaces: Listing my artworks on online art marketplaces like Saatchi Art, Artsy, and Etsy to reach a global audience. These platforms can help potential buyers discover my work and make purchases easily.
With the unwavering support of my dedicated team, I am confident that my paintings will find their way into the hands of passionate collectors and reputable galleries. I am immensely grateful for their encouragement and hard work. As I look ahead to what this year has in store for me and my art, I am filled with hope and excitement for the journey ahead.—
